Houston - January 28, 2010 – Ringing in its 10th year of existence with a successful Symposium just a few days ago, the Center for Houston’s Future is again in the limelight, celebrating the election of Kelly Frels, a noted trial lawyer, and Senior Partner at the firm Bracewell & Giuliani, as the new Chairman of its Board.

Filling in the shoes of his very able predecessor, Allegiance Bank CEO, George Martinez, will surely not be easy, but Frels has everything to excel at this enterprise as well. Boasting a list of professional achievements, publications, and awards that is too long to enumerate, Kelly Frels brings with him a passion for public law, education, quality of life, and the environment, that no one can deny.

Frels’ commitment to education is exemplified by his being the lead attorney for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) in its successful transition from a segregated to an integrated system in the 1980s. He also assisted in establishing the Houston Community College as a component of HISD and later helped the community college become an independent entity. His involvement in representing public school districts led him and five others to organize the School Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, which he later chaired. He has also broadened his client base among independent school districts, community colleges and universities, helping make the firm’s educational institution practice the largest in Texas among law firms when it comes to combined student population.

Frels has served as president of the Houston Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas. He has also been a director on many boards, including the State Bar of Texas, the Greater Houston Partnership (where he is also Director Emeritus), the HISD Foundation, and the Center for Reform of School Systems; he currently serves as Chair of the Texas Environmental Research Consortium Board of Directors, and as Co-Chair of the Texas Clean Air Working Group.

Aside from this, Kelly Frels has also been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America (2008-2010), as a Texas Super Lawyer, Schools and Education (2003-present), and as one of the Top 100 Houston Region Attorneys by Texas Monthly, in 2007.

The Center for Houston’s Future is a 501c (3) organization and advances the Houston region as one of the top ten global communities in which to live and work.
