Houston Have Your Say Wins Lone Star Award
HOUSTON- July 2, 2009 – The Center for Houston’s Future co-sponsored Houston Have Your Say televised public forum took top honors when it received First Prize in the Public Affairs category at the Houston Press Club’s Lone Star Awards.
Houston Have Your Say is a series of live, sixty-minute Town Hall-style broadcasts that allow the public to call in with questions about the show’s topic. The series is the result of a collaboration between HoustonPBS, the Center for Houston’s Future, and Houston Community Newspapers.
“The Houston Have Your Say Series has tackled some tough issues, starting with immigration.” said Catherine Mosbacher, the Center’s President and CEO. “Our goal is to provide a space where the community can debate the issue and generate solutions.”
The show’s host, Patricia Gras, and the HoustonPBS Communications Director, Julie Coan, both were awarded first prize for their journalistic work on Immigration, the topic of the winning episode. Other issues in the Houston Have Your Say series have been ‘Traffic and Regional Growth’, and the ‘Economy.’ The next episode will air this fall, and will focus on ‘Health Care.’
The Lone Star Awards are given each year in recognition of outstanding achievements in journalism and mass communication in the state of Texas. The competition encompasses efforts in the fields of print, radio, television and internet journalism; student publications and broadcasts; and public relations.
